Artist Bio: Nihilum Driving, unrelenting, intense and melodic. These are the four sonic pillars that North Carolina-based Black Metal artist Nihilum builds his sound around. The extremely religious environment that he grew up around played a pivotal role in shaping his musical tastes into what it is today, eventually discovering Black Metal, and finally finding the genre that embodies the essence that he set out to find since the beginning. He was immediately hooked to the metal genre as a child after listening to 'Frayed Ends Of Sanity' on Kansas City's rock station 'Mandatory Metallica' show. Additionally, his unfaltering passion for music serves as a coping mechanism for Nihilum. Above all, it's his commitment and love for the genre that drives him forward in his life.  With influences such as Watain, Mayhem, MGLA, Darkthrone, Marduk, Behemoth, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Cattle Decapitation, and many more. The stories and themes that he paints with his music revolve around the marriage of sci fi, horror, and Satanism all coalesced into one. Three of these releases were splits with the concept being to present opposing styles within the Death Metal genre. ROYAL ANGUISH / THE RISEN: This collection begins with two tracks that were exclusively recorded for the vinyl release. Florida versus New York style Death Metal is what’s on hand. OBLATION / DERACINATION: Here we have Florida inspired Death Metal (by way of Texas) versus a Napalm Death influenced assault from Down Under. This version of “Death By Fire” was exclusively recorded for the 7” release and is far more brutal than the version on their debut album “Times Of Atrocity” that preceded it. FAITHFUL WITNESS / MANSOUL: East Coast Death Metal versus a blend of Florida Death Metal and Megadeth inspired Thrash riffing. FINAL PROPHECY: The sole non-split release. They tried for years to get the band started and played a few gigs but the metal scene in Mexico was difficult for new bands with a niche genre during that time. They wanted to move to Finland with the sole purpose of making music, and through some twists and turns as well as some serious hardships they finally ended up here in 2016, managed to stabilize their life here and started to focus on the band again. Later the scope of influences has broadened and they’ve added vibes from bands such as Japanese symphonic metal band Versailles.Ulthima consists of Ricardo Escobar on Lead guitar, Antonio Valdés on bass, Jon Welti on rhythm guitar, Niko Sutinen on keys, Ville Nummisalo on drums and Tuomas Antila on vocals."Although Eternity was written under pressure as the last song to finish the album recording, it is still one of my favorites. The chorus was the first riff I wrote after moving to Finland becoming a very significant melody for the album. The musical influences for the track were alternative metal groups such as Deftones and Mudvayne.In the lyrics I wanted to talk about the human condition where we fondly look back to the past and dwell in nostalgia – trying to catch something that we have already lost. If we get stuck in our lost youth or some place, some person or some time, we risk to get lost in there like we would get lost in the woods. Promo pic by Esa Pitkälä Alase continues a series of digital single releases with a progressive newcomer, "Poissa silmistä". In addition to progressiveness, the song introduces darker and heavier sides of the band’s expression. Although there are more dark colours this time, the hope is still not forgotten. The lyrics of the song deal with things like forest fires that are raging around the world. Vocals on this song are performed by Juha Tretjakov, who is an experienced musician and currently a vocalist in new melodic death metal band Vansidian.  Guitarist Janne Lunnas shares some thoughts about the song:"I composed the basic structure of the song "Poissa silmistä" pretty quickly during the late summer. We began to work on the arrangements of the song with our drummer and bass player in August. The song required several arrangement sessions, as this one is rhythmically the most challenging track Alase has done so far. Lyrics of the song were written by Anni Aho already during last year. We recorded Juha Tretjakov’s vocals during one evening in Tampere, so it went quickly and smoothly. We had a creative atmosphere in this session in which we were able to improve several parts of the song from the demo version. The whole band is really happy with the result and we can't wait for the song to be released!" Now as there are no shows coming up for a while due to the pandemic, it’s a good time to focus on making new music and there are several songs under construction.
