Changing a band name can be a right pain in the arse, just as the band get going, suddenly they can find themselves pushed back a few steps as they set out to reconquer lost ground. This is what happened with Coffinrot in 2020 when they change their name to Coffin Rites. To counter this, Coffin Rites have mercilessly attacked over and over again with albums culminating in their latest release ‘Human Erase’.

With this latest album, Coffin Rites continue to pull down the door as they deliver blackened death metal with a thrashing undertone. This means that the Minnesotan band go like a dynamo with enough momentum to continue going and going and going as thrashing riffs pummel against blast beating drums and seething growls. This can be best seen during ‘Cryogenic Awakening’ and ‘Last Nail in the Coffin’ which have all the appeal of Skeletonwitch and Goatwhore whilst the excellent ‘Heart of Darkness’ with its Beethoven-esque gloom gives the track a sense of foreboding as it streams forward.

However, there isn’t anything here that the band haven’t really done before, yes ‘Heart of Darkness’ is great and it does stand head and shoulders above the rest, but the instrumental sections aren’t really needed in the grand scheme of things. All in all, Coffin Rites have delivered another decent album of death metal, it isn’t spectacular, nor is it shite, it sits just a little better than average and you know what? That’s alright. - Metal Digest

Release Date: September 10, 2021

FFO: Carcass, Goatwhore, Skeletonwitch and Rotting Christ

Minnesota black/death gravediggers Coffin Rites originally formed in 2017, releasing an album as Coffinrot before changing their name. While Retribution Divine is still representative of Coffin Rites, their new album Human Erase is the first official album under the new moniker. Decibel Magazine is psyched to offer an exclusive listen before the album’s release so you can sink your fangs into one of the year’s most crazed black/death records.

From the incendiary shred of opener “Buried in Blood,” Human Erase boasts frantic and frenzied energy. Even slower-paced tracks that rely more on ominous mood-building (“Cryogenic Awakening”) erupt with bursts of hellfire. The melodic riff-work of “Heart of Darkness” lures listeners into one of the album’s fastest blasts. Human Erase is rife with intriguing tone shifts; “The Night Speaks” could be an acoustic interlude on a classic Tiamat record. “Last Nail in the Coffin” relishes its death ‘n’ roll groove. The closing title track is the most diverse, blending hardcore and post-punk influences to the band’s scorched foundation. The recording and mixing by guitarist Will Maravelas gives the album a cutting sound that differentiates the snarls and growls from vocalist Drew Blood and gives the bass room to breathe. The legendary Dan Swanö mastered the record, sharpening each serrated note. This record is black/death for purists and hardcore kids alike. It has mood, menace, and a barrage of riffs like a doomsday air strike.

“Human Erase is a dark dive into the human psyche in which humanity either thrives or dies from our actions or inaction with each other and the surrounding world,” the band explains. “Each song is it’s own story told through the songwriting from the group as a whole, and the lyrical creations of vocalist Drew Blood.” - Decibel Magazine
