MONOLIYTH Reflects on Comeback, Melbourne Scene, and Future Plans in Exclusive Beneath the Surface Interview

Melbourne, Australia – Extreme death metal veterans MONOLIYTH are back in the spotlight following the release of their ferocious album He Who Kills (August 2025, Wormholedeath Records). In a candid new feature with Beneath the Surface magazine, founder Mick Barr opens up about the band’s comeback, creative process, and the evolution of Melbourne’s underground metal scene.

After a 17-year journey since their 2008 release Imminent Demise , Mick recounts the challenges behind He Who Kills , describing the production process as “frustrating” and nearly abandoning the project before Luke Walton at Dangertone Studios helped bring the album to life. The record dives deep into the grim psyche of serial killers, exploring “the mechanics behind what drives someone to that point,” while staying firmly rooted in the band’s trademark old-school death metal sound.

Reflecting on their hometown, Mick praises Melbourne’s thriving metal community, noting that the city’s underground scene has grown exponentially since the late ‘90s, now bolstered by an influx of international acts and homegrown talent.

International acclaim has also followed the band, with highlights including a landmark performance in Romania. Mick emphasizes that seeing “blood, sweat, and tears” resonate overseas was a defining moment for Monoliyth and an affirmation of their decades-long dedication.

Looking ahead to 2026, Monoliyth is already gearing up for Brutefest 2026 , sharing the stage with US thrash icons Warbringer and local heavyweights Destruktor and Desecrator . Fans can also anticipate the band’s next studio effort, tentatively titled Plagues of Deceit , with nine tracks already written and set for recording later this year.
