“Isolation” sets the tone for the EP with crushing guitars, unexpected time signature shifts, and lyrics exploring the consequences of past decisions—a theme woven throughout Ill-Gotten Gains . Following their earlier 2025 EP Machines , this release marks a bold step forward, showcasing AITTALA’s mastery of blending traditional metal, doom, groove, and progressive elements into a cohesive, immersive experience.
The EP cover revisits the band’s iconic mascot, Frank—a cartoon pig head in a pentagram, first introduced in 2014’s Effigy —adding a darkly humorous touch to the record’s themes of chaos, exploitation, and the search for redemption.
Formed in 1991 in the Netherlands by guitarist/vocalist Eric Aittala, AITTALA quickly became a fixture in the Dutch metal scene, sharing stages with The Gathering and Sadist. After a long hiatus, the band reemerged in 2008 and has since released six full-length albums and multiple EPs. Now based in the U.S., AITTALA continues as a two-piece with Eric Aittala and powerhouse drummer Gary “Zeus” Smith (THE FIFTH, ex-MR BLACKWELL), pushing the boundaries of emotionally resonant and technically precise metal.
