Under the disloyal heading "Oathbreaker" hides the great record release of Boneyard, the Canadian band led by the singer, guitarist and lyricist Pamtera. The combo, a native of Edmonton, began its journey in 1995 as a cover group until, in 2017 and after establishing a stable line-up (Dennis Cooke on bass, Grant Tarapacki on guitar and Jeff Cunningham on drums), he decided to compose his own material and lock himself in the studio two years later, a worldwide pandemic through, to give birth to his opera prima. In this debut the quartet offers us a contemporary hard rock with a fine patina of heavy metal based on the varied and worked vocal lines -captained by the clean and melodious timbre of its vocalist- and in the remarkable work of the guitars. Fates Warning opens the thunder box with a rhythmic pattern that progresses to become a riding cadence with effluvium of the NWOBHM, the fantastic Gone has a muscular and hardroquero riff that accelerates as the stanzas progress until culminating with the chorus and in which the work of the drums and the lead guitar stands out, and Evil Ways is an imposing half-time with the six strings of Tarapacki emerging between the rhythm marked by those of Pamtera (reminiscent at times of those of Big City Nights of Scorpions) and with a bridge and a main verse excellently constructed. Smoke The Sky begins at point blank range and is playing with different speeds throughout the stanzas, the homonymous theme starts with an arpeggiated chord and a few hoop strokes, has a melodic and enrapturing chorus and a fabulous verse that leads us to the final solo with a beautiful harmony, while Rat Race is another metal cut and dizzying rhythm, with the singing of Pamtera accompanied initially by the bass and drums and whose fantastic later guitar lines, together with the sinister central fragment, deservedly capture all the protagonism. Monster is a rock cut with the main riff intertwining phenomenally with the voice and in which double bass drum and keyboards emerge, and Born Again, with a structure very even to that of the previous one, is another great track with an accelerated chorus and a wild shared solo. Hope is a hard rock in the current American style with a perennial arpeggiated guitar, a long melodic but catchy main stanza and another great solo, Tune Attack has a wild solo melody seconded by a persevering riffage interrupted by the change of pace of the fantastic bridge and Catch Me If You Can lowers the curtain with Pamtera's voice surfing the guitar line until the arrival of the chorus and its suggestive choruses. In short, we can testify that "Oathbreaker" is an entertaining, exciting and hopeful start to a band full of energy and good vibes, with personality and a rock facet that looks clearly victorious.
