New Jersey upstarts Pyre Fyre follow on from a handful of well received singles and have now released their first substantial collection of songs with a self-titled EP/mini album. In the resurgent and well populated Stoner genre it is nigh-on impossible to carve your own niche without heading to the extreme, and Pyre Fyre quite wisely avoid heading too far out to be accessible and strike a neat balance somewhere along the Stoner/Fuzzed-out Psychedelia sliding scale, and simply write solid tunes.

Seven songs in a scrape over 18min is pushing it to call this an album in the accepted sense, but in a scene known for excessive long-form compositions, it is somewhat refreshing to have short and snappy songs devoid of flab and repetition. When things head further down the Psych route, such as the excellent “Arachnophobia” and “Cordyceps” that close out the record, the band really fall into a groove that is every bit as good as the biggest name artists in the Stoner and Doom world.

Yep, there isn’t exactly a whole heap of content, but what there is is really quite good. Nothing groundbreaking or exceptional; but it’s a thoroughly good listen and a foretaste of what these guys may well be capable of in the future. Metal Digest
