When you’re feeling optimistic or content with yourself and need to be brought down to where you belong, this is the album for you. When Hearts Wither (WHW) offers music that is agonizingly beautiful, gloriously suffocating, and heavy as childhood guilt. Cruising along at the speed of G (glacier), ‘This Is Where It Ends’ grinds the soul and leaves all hope buried under an inky cloak of despair. Primarily, the work of Australian Andrew Derksen, ‘…Ends’ is quintessential doom and gloom and gorgeously morose. And that’s just track one.

Within the first two tracks (about 20 minutes), there isn’t a lot of deviation, and honestly, I wasn’t overly excited about the rest of the album. Then, as if reading my mind (generally ill-advised), something wonderful occurs. Clean vocals and spoken word passages are expanded, and the keyboards assume a more central role. The tempos and vocal cadence remain largely unchanged, but there is a marked change in atmosphere. All things considered, ‘…Ends’ is what this type of music is all about, but, honestly, it isn’t vastly different from what you’ve heard before. In other words, this is one person’s version of the well-established, but still pretty good. If somehow, you haven’t listened to this type of music before, then When Hearts Wither is a fine introduction. Otherwise, stick with the classics. Perhaps, one day WHW will join their ranks.
