I listened for the first time to this “ Post Fata Resurgo ” before reading the accompanying notes of the disc and my first impression was “ they are good cinni (boys, in my dialect) on their debut ”.

And as happens in many debut albums, I thought: " You feel like the ideas about the project aren't perfectly focused yet... " and again: " But if we want to see the positive side of the coin, we can appreciate, precisely by virtue of this, a rich variety of inspirations and styles… ”

I go to read the presentation of the band and I discover, in the words of Max Pezzali , that I have “ fucked like a god ”: Zaburon have existed since '99 and have already released an album in 2003! Sure, the sixteen-year hiatus and subsequent reunion give this record and the band a kind of new virginity, but my nose is dead wrong, so don't trust what I'm going to write.
True, the technical report should have made me understand that the group from Bergamo was not made up of rookies, but it is known that by now the scene is full of highly skilled sixteen-year-olds and, in any case, I felt the "maturity and awareness" factor a little latent.

With a name halfway between that of a super villain from the comics and a vernacular insult, the quartet offers a sort of Death Metal declined in its most accessible and melodic forms, avoiding all the brutal and technical components.

When I heard the first epic notes of the opening track “ Voices From The Past ” I pleasantly rediscovered that late nineties Swedish atmosphere, with the Dark Tranquility guitars weaving melodies over a pounding drums and for the first few minutes I found all quite convincing and engaging. Then comes the gimmick of inserting four sad bars of totally free and non-functional blues stacchetto (they're guys...) and then resuming the previous riffs and getting bogged down in a mud in which nothing interesting happens, between tired melodies and ordinary accompaniments. Fifty seconds from the end, however, a riff with an irresistible groove awakens us, framed by tasty fills by the good drummer Christian Togni.

For “ Alone In The Shadow ” we have a decisive stylistic change in which we abandon the abundance of phrasing in favor of only three riffs, characterized however by atypical metrics (the main riff is in 5/4 time) and broken 'n'roll rhythms which cannot fail to evoke Swansong 's Carcass , however drained of the charisma of the English.

We complicate things again (and we go back beyond seven minutes…) with the following “ Instinct ”, perhaps the most aggressive and heaviest of the disc, in which the melodies become more angular and gloomy, perhaps looking for a of malice a la Morbid Angel , always then tempered by melodic openings that are a little lagnosette, in a mosaic of decidedly sustained riffs and rhythms.

That of “ Damnation ” instead seems to be another group: a tamarro (complete with a “yeah!”) and rocking remake innervates a song that leaves you surprised by its inadequacy, from all points of view.

Davide Ricciuti 's voice would also have a good timbre, in its rich and deep growl, but it contributes very little in instilling life and drive to the pieces. It must be said that throughout the disc we have the impression that there is a lot of superfluous playing time, on part of which the singing becomes tired, not very involved, as if he too were questioning how appropriate that section was.

As further confirmation of how immature the project is, I thought when I still believed them to be beardless children, we have the instrumental intermezzo “ Breath Of Betrayer ”, built entirely on that arpeggio, yeah… THAT! That passage from Dm(add9) to Dm(add9)/Bb which, in addition to having already heard on many records, each of us will surely have "composed" by tinkering with our own guitar (complex names, simple fingering).

Luca Zanardi , guitarist and main composer of the band, chooses an approach that dispenses with actual solos, in favor of even rather articulated melodic phrasing, which in the most appropriate cases are the moments of greatest strength of the compositions and help us to identify and memorize songs. In less inspired moments, however, they accompany the hearse of the dearly departed with the transport and emphasis of a fifth cousin.

We go back to being mean with “ Facing Death ”, another long and complicated, dark song, between death/thrash riffing and asymmetrical guitar melodies a la My Dying Bride , in a compositional anarchy where it is not clear where you want to go parry: the compass is lost, but it must be recognized that everyone is very committed to rowing like crazy! Especially the drummer.

It is probably a war horn that opens the dance of the pugnacious “ Legion Of Deceivers ”, long, stagnant and successful like a Russian campaign, despite the well-chosen riffs of the finale.

Thrashing speed and epic melodicity for the succinct " Delirium ", which turns out to be one of the most convincing proposals of " Post Fata Resurgo ".

Straddling Sabaton and Amon Amarth comes " War ", an anti-militarist piece paraculatically linked to the coolest war of the moment, but not without its own decisive and enthralling attitude! And in its second part, between the melodic texture of the guitars and the final charge, we can even hear Antonello D'Aguanno's bass emerge, which manages to get noticed in the Cesarini area, marking the always valuable drum breaks. The finale is entrusted to a poignant piano and takes us directly to the short instrumental “ No Regrets” which concludes the album in a crescendo of mock strings, melancholic and solemn, in the predictably tacky orchestration that usually distinguishes these virtual instruments.

A few too many yawns on this record, but who knows... maybe in another sixteen years they'll surprise us with a bombshell debut! italiadimetallo
