A song he had entered in a contest months earlier had been selected as a finalist. Initially, Kaney didn’t think much of it, having long abandoned dreams of rock and roll stardom. His last performance was in 2012 at Vamp’d in Las Vegas, and since then, he had confined his musical activities to writing and recording at home.

A month later, another call informed him that his song "When You Got Nothin’" had won the contest, earning the title of Rock Song of the Year from the Nashville Music Awards. This unexpected recognition reignited Kaney’s passion, setting the stage for the formation of Rattler Reb.
