Make no bones about it; Weapon of Pride aren’t here to play any schmaltzy ballads. It’s almost as if they have turned up to give us 40 minutes of ballsy Hard Rocking fun and “never say die” attitude, and to hell with what any corporate suit wants them to do.
And it’s so fucking cool that they have.

First thing to love is the (deceptively) simple “up and at it” riffage: I picked up my acoustic to work the chords out, and then quite quickly put it back down again. Some deeply talented playing and quality songcraft definitely at work.
Second thing to love is the vocals, all clean, and grungy tinged, that sit at an imagined sweet spot halfway between Alice in Chains and early Manic’s. Not just the lead, the harmonies and simple twin-tracked vocals also recall those two early 90’s icons.

And there is an overall 90’s vibe to the record that is really tricky to define; it’s more of a feeling than anything. And with the youthful vigour and Hard Rock fury on display, that really isn’t a bad thing.

Except one thing. One cover version mid album knocks all the life out. It’s not a bad cover (Tears for Fear’s early 80’s masterpiece “Change”) and they make a good job of it. Put it on last, and there’s no problem; it’s just such a vibe-killer at track six. Metal Digest
