Now as you may or may not know there were many fledgling bands releasing their debut albums and metal music kept growing and evolving. Releases such as Megadeth's "Killing Is My Business" and Exodus' "Bonded By Blood" were pushing the boundaries of metal music. Out of all these amazing releases, the most legendary one, the one that revolutionized metal, was the most overlooked and underrated. Seven Churches.

This album gave birth to death metal. Period. This album was the heaviest, fastest, and most brutal thing that the world had ever heard at this time. In my humble opinion, it beats almost any other metal album of its time in terms of speed and aggression and what it did overall for the genre of extreme music as a whole. There isn't anything out there like this today and it still holds up as a monumental essential death metal classic 35 years later! This album was also much more technical than much of the other albums around its time. Seven Churches is an absolute benchmark in metal history, yet it is one of the most underrated in metal history and for that I will never understand. Possessed are so damned good that you would swear these guys were ahead of their time on this record.

What really stands out to me is how revolutionary this album is and what these guys would go on to create. They single handedly paved the way for the extreme genre that would forever be known as Death Metal. So many people would argue that Chuck Schuldnier and DEATH gave birth to the genre and while i have nothing but respect for both Chuck and DEATH? I completely disagree with the latter. Possessed are the godfathers of the genre, with DEATH being just 2 years behind with their debut Scream Bloody Gore which was released in 1987. One could argue that Seven churches had its roots more in thrash than death metal sure just because of the time period. But the absolute earliest roots of Death metal are all over this record and it will always be my favorite death metal album. moving Onto the music itself: its fantastic, brutal, uncompromising and vicious.

The musicianship is top notch and these guys knew how to play and they sure as hell knew what they wanted to do. Being that they were so godamned young really sets them apart from so many other acts around this time as well! Now whats even more impressive is that they wrote this album and recorded it during a spring break, and also consider the fact that they were still in high school as i mentioned earlier! The intro to "The Exorcist" is probably one of the best intros I've ever heard and it sends fucking chills down your spine and really sets up the tone and the atmosphere for this record.. so lets check out "The Exorcist"..... and we are back I know it's from the actual movie of the same title, but they seriously put it to better use here. The majority of the album is fast and brutal. Just in-your-face killer, but at the same time there is a very technical edge to it. It's hard to find a band around 1985 that could compete with Possessed when it came to the sheer raw talent that these guys had in 1985 at just 16 years of age! In fact it is downright fucking mindblowing.
