Jason Newsted remembers what Cliff Burton's parents told him after joining Metallica

Jason Newsted remembered how he approached the Metallica audition back in 1986, telling Loudwire:

“It wasn’t that hard to figure out what setlist the band played with Ozzy during the tour in December that time. It wasn’t any kind of giant secret.

“[I brought the setlist] on Flotsam and Jetsam stationery with my logo at the top, it was written down in the order that they had performed the last time they played in our area, and I handed it to [Lars] over the drums.

“He looked at the logo, and he looked at the list, and I said, ‘I know these songs.’ And then he went, ‘Holy shit dude, that’s cool!’

“And he goes, ‘Lets play that one, that one, that one, that one.’ And we did. And they called me back two days later.”

Focusing on landing the gig, Jason said:

“The Burtons were there, and Torben Ulrich was there – both Burtons were alive then.

“They were so nice to me. When I got back they all came to watch me, and help me, and embrace me.

“[Cliff’s mother] Jan Burton grabbed me right away, ‘Once the guys told me, I said you were the one, they know you are the one, please be safe.’

“That was heavy. They are passing Cliff’s torch on who’s getting it.”
