BLABBERMOUTH PRAISES DETERIOROT’S “ECHOES FROM THE PAST” AS ESSENTIAL DEATH METAL HISTORY
Vic Records Reissue Highlights Nearly 40 Years of Relentless Underground Legacy
Legendary American death metal cult DETERIOROT are receiving high praise from Blabbermouth following the reissue of their 2016 compilation Echoes From The Past , now available via Vic Records.
In their in-depth review, Blabbermouth recognizes DETERIOROT as a band “revered for their pungent brutality,” highlighting their rare ability to fuse evil, oppressive death metal with slower, majestic passages informed by traditional heavy metal. Despite maintaining a low profile over their nearly 40-year history, the band is praised for the consistently high quality of their output and their unwavering commitment to their original vision.
Fronted by founding member and sole original member Paul Zavaleta, DETERIOROT are acknowledged as a death metal force that has grown sharper and more driven in recent years. Blabbermouth notes that tracks like “Apocalyptic Holy Wars” deliver a suffocating, ominous assault comparable to genre titans such as Immolation, Incantation, and Disma, while still sounding unmistakably DETERIOROT.
The review also applauds the band’s ability to balance raw barbarity with epic, doom-laden grandeur. Songs such as “The Faithless” and “Endless Hauntings of Demons and Despair” are cited for their dramatic weight, blending depressive atmosphere with triumphant, unhinged aggression without ever drifting into excess or cliché.
Echoes From The Past compiles material spanning DETERIOROT’s entire history, including early demo recordings, the long sold-out 1993 EP Manifested Apparitions of Unholy Spirits , live tracks from 1993, the unreleased Unholy Return promo from 2000, and the modern-era track “Reanimateen,” recorded during recent sessions. Blabbermouth emphasizes that while the exclusive material makes the release mandatory for longtime fans, it also serves as an ideal entry point for new listeners discovering the band for the first time.
Measured against the broader death metal landscape, Blabbermouth concludes that DETERIOROT offer creative depth that will resonate with fans of both Cannibal Corpse and My Dying Bride. In an era where old school death metal has regained prominence, the review underscores that DETERIOROT remain a band worthy of respect, recognition, and renewed attention from a new generation of extreme metal fans.
With Echoes From The Past and the recent full-length Awakening , DETERIOROT continue to prove that true underground death metal does not age. It only grows more dangerous.
