SOCIETY 1 RECREATES KURT COBAIN SUICIDE ROOM IN POWERFUL NEW MUSIC VIDEO “YOU MADE ME”
Shock rock band Society 1 has unveiled their latest and most provocative project yet with the release of their new music video, “You Made Me.” The video digitally recreates the infamous greenhouse where Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain took his own life in April 1994—offering a visceral and controversial visual experience that aims to spotlight the emotional toll of toxic relationships and mental illness.
The original greenhouse structure—located behind Cobain's Lake Washington home—was demolished shortly after his death. Using actual crime scene photographs and advanced AI technology, Society 1 has meticulously reconstructed the space for the video, marking a first-of-its-kind depiction of the room in motion.
“The song is about Kurt and another person I knew personally who took their own life because of what I believe was toxic love,” says frontman Matt Zane . “The chorus says, ‘Your love made me die.’ It’s a way of saying ‘Courtney Love made me die’—not in some conspiratorial way, but as a reflection of the lack of support, understanding, and emotional neglect some people face.”
In addition to the band performing inside the virtual greenhouse, the video expands on never-before-seen perspectives of the surrounding environment, offering an emotionally immersive experience meant to put viewers in the shoes of those lost to suicide.
“We used AI to place the viewer in the room like never before,” adds Zane. “I wanted them to feel the weight of standing where someone they cared about ended their life. That moment stuck with me forever.”
The video ends with a harrowing scene: Zane himself depicted taking his own life with a shotgun—an artistic statement meant to underscore how vulnerable anyone can become under the weight of emotional trauma.
“It could have been any one of us,” Zane explains. “When you’re with the wrong person and feel there’s no way out, it’s easy to imagine making the same tragic choice.”
“You Made Me” is the band’s first music video following the release of Zane’s recent book, “Everyone Dies: The Matt Zane Reckoning” (Heavy Music Artwork), and earlier this year’s critically noted documentary “Everyone Dies (Rock Stars Don’t Count).”
