Divinist is one of several bands from Pennsylvania that have given me pause lately. Something very Metal is brewing in the Keystone State; I may have to investigate this further.

On their debut EP, they deliver songs that trudge, sludge, and pulverize through an ultra-low frequency assault. And those vocals! Dayumm! If dooom and glooom (yes, with three Os) are what you seek, then settle on in. Perfect for a horror movie soundtrack or to score your own personal nightmare, Divinist takes the “none more black” ideology seriously. With cheery visuals such as “Death is the price of curiosity” and “murder raining from the sky,” there is no beauty here, not even a dying ember of what once was.

With blackened fuzz and morosity oozing forth and occasional stylized spoken word phrases peppered about, the overall effect is wonderfully oppressive and bleak.

Regarding the Black/Doom genre: For the longstanding fan, Divinist won’t be earthshattering, but still pretty dang good. For the casual fan (such as myself), it will be most enjoyable and intriguing. For the novice: Mind blown in 3…2…1…

Pick your status and give this a stab, then call your mom. Metal Digest !

"Ominous, sludgy doom seething with evil intent. Bleak, black and sullen, the surprisingly sumptuous sound adds multitudes of layers, pitted with pained, acidic guitar leads, to the numbing, hypnotic dissonance taking root into your skull. Painfully slow, not even the added death metal element breaks Divinist Band from its lumbering stride of behemothic proportions. Dark, necromantic spells are cast from the first track and the feeling of oppressive malevolence leaves goosebumps on the nape of your neck long after the final track 'Curse' has ended." ~ Deathrattle Podcast
