From the town of Speyer, in the heartlands of Germany’s wine producing Rhine Valley, we meet singular Sludgy Post-Metal upstarts VAV. But before you go charging off to find them on your preferred streaming service, make sure you have the right band. They share the name with a sickly-sweet and frankly horrifying K-Pop outfit. And nobody needs to make that mistake, do they?

“Paths” is the second outing for this trio of Metal Warriors, in late 2019 their debut release “V” confounded the Roman numeral naming convention for sure and became something of a soundtrack to the loneliness and despair of the pandemic for a certain breed of metalhead. The comforting recipe of guttural vocals, downtuned everything, and a sparse approach to crushing Doom interspersed with charging Post-Metal crescendos put a smile on many faces (!!)

VAV continue in pretty much the same vein with “Paths”; they have used the longer gestation period for these songs to further explore the potential for light and shade, with huge dynamics and quite dramatic lifts and drops in tempo. It does come as something of a contrast to the unchanging vocals, where every piece receives the same throat-ripping treatment to the point where it starts to get mildly annoying. Still, if variety is your thing, there is a short piece of Lounge-Jazz halfway through the album to refresh your tastebuds. There’s even an attempt to invoke a ballad. And none of the songs go past the 10-minute mark either. Metal Digest
