There is more than one way to make deliberately “heavy” music. Tacoma’s Born a Ghost are not trying to “reinvent the wheel” and come up with an entirely new formula to produce a similar or familiar end result. What they bring to the table with the “Stairway to an Empty Room” EP is a stark and discomfortingly honest approach to subject matter as contentious and difficult as addiction, suicide, and mental health. You don’t even need to hear or understand the words themselves to feel the weight; they put every fibre of their being into these songs in a way that transcends the constraints of mere language. 

Though not a prolific band (this is only the second EP either side of one full album; 2021’s “The Beginning to an Ending”, what they lack in quantity of output is more than compensated with the pent-up rage and frustration surging through this act of musical brutality. If you go back to the closing track from the debut album, “The Tower”, the despair and isolation, the fear and the simmering anger surround the listener like the Grim Reaper’s cloak closing around your mortal soul in a final embrace. 

The musicianship to be found on this follow-up is from the top-drawer, and matched with sympathetic production, the raw and visceral nature of the four songs simply hits like a hammer to the face. That they have raised the stakes higher into this exhortation of darkness is in no way to suggest you’ll find any form of a resolution or catharsis; “Stairway to an Empty Room” is more a witness to the taboo horror of the world falling apart for a damaged soul.   Metal Digest
