The album art, the name, the concept, the style. We’re ticking all the boxes for me with the new release from North Carolina’s Droid Killer and their debut full length death/doom opus, ‘The Terminator vs The Preacher’, which will be out in October through Black Halo Records. Chronicling the human vs machine war from their base in Antarctica, this is classic sci fi influenced metal at its most fun.
First track, ‘The Collapse’ is a churning, mechanical death march complete with an oddly swaggering solo and closing segment. This isn’t your massive, sleek death/doom monoliths, this is the kind of death metal and doom mix that we’ve been missing and we didn’t even know it. Swedish death metal mixed with stoner doom? Could be. There’s a crunchiness to it that reminds me of Six Feet Under (their rare good stuff), and the groove infesting ‘Technology’s Noose’ is fairly righteous. ‘Terminator’ is a massive, bruising steamroller of a track, and while the doom passages are great (see the almost Cathedral-esque groove of ‘Hunter Killer’ or the sleazy blues of ‘Upgrade’), the moments where the death metal rides higher are my favourite moments. The Asphyx rumble of ‘Fear Fully Made’ is pure death metal thunder, giving me images of metal feet treading on bare human skulls.
‘The Terminator vs The Preacher’ is an odd little record on first listen; you’ve got big swaggering grooves coupled with a nasty death metal roar and guitar tone that seems a little superficial in combination on the surface. But as the record develops, the irresistable hooks get into you, the groove takes a hold and the deathly roar becomes intoxicating. Add in all your little sci fi effects and detours and you’ve got a great, fun record about the inevitable machine-led holocaust of mankind. Not often that happens. thoseonceloyal
