Review by Sandre the Giant
With possibly one of the best band names out there at the moment, Massachusetts’ Problem with Dragons are back with their third full length record of sludge and stoner metal, ‘Accelerationist’, out now through Bandcamp. A very unique sounding band, this new record could be something rather special.
‘Live by the Sword’ has immediate Kyuss meets Crowbar vibes to me; that kind of spacey stoner atmosphere underpinned by a classic sludgy blues groove. It has a really unique psychedelica to it, as does ‘In the Name of His Shadow’ and while I was expecting something a little more EyeHateGod, there’s clearly a big Kylesa influence on the band. They mix that churning low end groove with a dreamy psychedelica that I really like, like the sci-fi haze of ‘A Demon Possessed’ or the sublime groove of the mercurial ‘Against Me’. I especially love ‘Have Mercy, Show Mercy’, now that has some real ‘Blood Mountain-era Mastodon touches about it. What I really like about ‘Accelerationist’ is that this is a band giving me a sound and a style that I really haven’t experienced before. It is remarkably accessible as well as being a little off-kilter and unusual.
While it lacks the expected visceral hit of most sludge records, ‘Accelerationist’ is loaded with groove and a shit ton of cosmic weirdness that would be enhanced even more by the consumptions of psychedelics I’m sure. Problem With Dragons have the real talent of sounding like no one else; a melting pot of influences by classic bands but somehow the end result sounds like none of them. If you’re into bands that expand your consciousness, Problem with Dragons could be the very one for you. - The Killchain Blog

“Rooted from Easthampton, Massachusetts in 2007, Problem With Dragons execute heavily fuzzed-out, unrestricted music. A meaty stew compiled of equal parts Stoner Metal, Sludge, Punk, Doom, Grunge, and Heavy Metal, with a heavy dash of Prog Rock.” - METTLE MEDIA PR
“Problem With Dragons do us all a solid and set the time back – several thousand years! Entering the primordial age with nothing but a club in one hand and a skull in the other we bang our heads like cavemen of yore as the Massachussetts clan roll out blood-splattered victory songs in the form of Moon Ritual, Agenda 21, and Live By The Sword – the opener for Accelerationist, a record many millenia in the making – before turning their sights on us In The Name Of His Shadow. This neanderthalic brand of heaviness is fucking mightier than dying in battle, and the resounding impression my fellow festival-goers cheer is just as mighty! Hailing victorious against the foes of, well, any day, Problem With Dragons usher in a close to this stage that has us vying for more!“ - The Motofuzzin’ Ibex
