There’s a strange longevity to black metal; to the naked eye new bands never seemingly appear, but if you look deep within the caverns, you’ll find endless black metal bands with 30+ years under their belt. One band recently celebrating the double X are Devourer as the Swedes release their latest album ‘Raptus’.
As all good black metal should, ‘Raptus’ thunders out of the gates in a lightning attack which can easily catch the listener off guard. Yet, just before the faculties have returned, ‘Raptus’ demonstrates that not all black metal needs a blitzkrieg because suddenly, the tempo is changed for some heavy shelling of sludge driven riffs and when coupled with memorable hooks, ‘Raptus’ actually remains really fresh and exciting. Through tracks such as ‘Bearer of Dark Tidings’, ‘The Arbiter of Nullification’ and ‘TON 618’, ‘Raptus’ delivers wave after wave of endless assaults which bring about all the appeal of Dark Funeral, Marduk and 1349.
‘Raptus’ is actually almost perfectly produced, it has that heady mix of raw, old-school black metal coupled with the modern polish that plays well in modern hi-fi systems which lets the energy held within pour out of the speakers as Devourer deliver one of the best black metal albums of the year. - Metal Digest
