Raw, violent, real, and straightforward. Utterly brutal, and wickedly smashing, the latest release by France’s Beyond the Styx is the perfect balance between metal’s fast blazing riffs, and hardcore’s anger and pure rage.
The sentence is the logical follow up to Stigma, as it takes the same overall identity of a band dripping with genuineness and authenticity, and blends in elements that are more technical in the form of solos, riff writing, and song structures, giving birth to one of the most face grinning albums I’ve encountered in a while. There is nothing more to say than the fact that the LP melts your face riff after riff, and crushes your skull breakdown after breakdown, as some are so absurdly violent that you can only imagine how much fun the lads are have had during the recording sessions. And for having seen them live (in one of the craziest shows I attended), I can attest that the album is sounding very real and natural, humane in the sense that you feel a mortal hand chugging their power chords, as opposed to many modern bands where the playing is so perfect that it sounds almost robotic.
The vocals seem to be the barking of a rabid dog, and they do well in spilling out the singer’s rage, as you can almost imagine his veins bursting out with the intensity of what’s expressed, and they do exfoliate all the negative emotions one could have accumulated. The perfect fit for a piece of music so aggressive. The drums are effortless, as they throw in just the perfect amount of technique, no unnecessary showing off, just plain brutality in the service of an album as raw as can be.
Last but not least, the production is the best the band has had so far, and it can only be expected when you know it was achieved by the mastermind Christian Donaldson, who’s worked with legends such as Despised Icon and Cryptopsy. It emphasizes each instrument the right amount, and boy, that guitar tone is so dirty, so suffocating and its chugs reek of an ENGL tube amp, a sound of perfection. - Metal-Roos
