Blackhearth were founded in 2010 by guitarist Alex Hernández and drummer Asier Larrea. Both are obviously the only remaining members from the early years. But it wasn't until early 2017 that the band began attributing songs for a debut album. The self-titled debut was released in August 2019 via Sliptrick Records. Two years later, the successor "The Wrath Of God" is now available. And for the title song, the Basques could win none other than Tim "Ripper" Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth, KK's Priest and others). So it goes without saying that I listened to it once.

Blackhearth-bandpic2Already in the opener "Betrayal" Judas Priest Feeling spreads. Without a long preface, the Spaniards go straight to the full. You want to go along with it immediately. But don't worry, this is not a cheap copy but an independent sound. Powerfully whipping forward. In addition, of course, solos of the twin guitars. And the drummer really drives his comrades-in-arms. "Into The Unknown" is classic heavy metal. Not quite as fast as the song before but no less powerful. But Blackhearth can also do it quieter, as they prove in "My Bornless Child". At first, slightly doomy sounds can be heard, which is a little reminiscent of Black Sabbath. This mostly balladic song is a highlight on the album. A word to the singer, Alain Concepción has a strong, slightly scratchy sounding voice. And this fits perfectly with the instrumental sound. But with "Rotten To The Core" the contemplation is over. Partly almost speed metal, is fired here from all pipes. Another quieter song follows. "Nothing But Dust" shines with beautiful melodic and many balladic insertions. The mercilessly advancing "The Wrath Of God" is refined by the singing of Tim Owens. "True Belief" is a Priest-typical rocker with a slight thrash punch, while "Reaching The Shore" sounds extremely anthemic. Memories of Dio are awakened here. After a few balladic insertions, the kick-out "Banished Forever" is a real power ballad from start to finish.

Blackhearth have delivered an all-round convincing second work. They revive the spirit of classic heavy metal. Good songwriting and excellent musicians are the recipe for success. A crystal clear and bold production completes the album. "The Wrath Of God" should not be missing in any record collection of a heavy metal fan. - Keep On Rocking
