Weight Of Emptiness is a Chilean metal band that taps from various sources. On the second album Conquering The Deep Cycle you will find elements from progressive, death and black metal. The band originated from the band Twilight Mist, but guitarists Juan Acevedo, Alejandro Bravo and singer Alejandro Ruiz decided to make a new start with Weight Of Emptiness. Bassist David Hernández and drummer Mauricio Basso joined in and the new adventure could begin. David was replaced by Manuel Villarroel and the debut Anfractuous Moments For Redemption was launched.
There was a lot of touring in South America and in 2017 the band was well received by the press. Manuel also left the band and Mario Urra now closed the ranks, after which the band released their second album in August 2019 through Australis Records. With the new album in our pocket, Europe and South America were visited again. In the meantime, the video was put online at The Flame and later the video at Invisible Mind Workers, which made this reviewer curious about this album.
The album is surrounded by the instrumental compositions Conquering and Deep Cycle. Within it there is a lot of metal played in which elements from various metal genres are processed. Invisible Mind Workers an immediate rousing death metal start. The composition has power, a megariff and is adorned by tight and strong drumming. Here the vibes of Septicflesh, Opeth and Behemoth come together in a blistering explosion of power. The character changes slightly and slides to a more lingering scale in which beautiful guitar work takes the lead. Especially towards the end, the riffs provide a reference to Opeth's older work. Chucao is a nice sequel with a nice death metal rhythm. The band does not shy away from making trips and so you are thrown from the metal rock towards a kind of rainforest character with beautiful guitar work and clean vocals that again feel Opeth-like. It turns out to be a small foretaste for The Flame in which you are thrown in all directions. It has power and energy and there is a nice variety in the heavy grunts and dark clean vocals of Alejandro. The whole is given even more body by the ingenious play of rhythms.
Lapse Of Insanity, Lamentos and Eleven Ravens are calmer in nature and the pace is a lot slower. There is a calm vibe in a very powerful game. The grunts from the depths and the clean vocals from more religious higher spheres contrast beautifully in Lapse Of Insanity and that vibe continues in Lamentos. The chant is more penetrating and approaches the spheres of a Tibetan mantra. On top of that, the band also puts a Spanish accent in the quiet interlude which makes the composition damn attractive and above all engaging. Eleven Ravens lingers in the heavy character and slowly shifts towards the black metal. The tempo then steadily accelerates towards death metal. The intense character is retained by the immense vocals followed by a light ending.
Then the accelerator is pressed a bit again and the death metal is around the corner in Drainers and Lurking Hope to merge all the tried and tested metal elements into a final conclusion in Two Tears Alone.
As said before, Conquering The Deep Cycle has been out for a while, but Weight Of Emptiness has rightly drawn attention to this album again with the video of Invisible Mind Workers. Fans of Septicflesh and Behemoth would do well to give this disc a good listen.
