Sweden – Rising from the ashes of Sweden’s legendary dark music scene, Ashen Sun announces their first single, “Faith’s Funeral” , set to be released December 5th, 2025. A self-released statement of gothic grandeur, the track marks Johnny Hagel’s return as a visionary force in the shadows, blending melancholic rock with pulsating electronic textures.

Formed by Hagel, formerly bassist and co-writer of Tiamat and Sundown, Ashen Sun fuses the atmospheric melancholy of 90s gothic rock with the hypnotic pulse of cold-wave synths. Produced by Johnny Hagel and mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström, “Faith’s Funeral” evokes the solemn elegance of bands like The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of Nephilim, and Type O Negative while carving its own cinematic and immersive path.

Ashen Sun’s music explores isolation, decay, and post-human longing, layering brooding atmospheres over hypnotic rhythms. Hagel describes the project as “a requiem for fading empires and dying stars,” capturing both the intimacy of personal reflection and the grandeur of gothic mythos. Emerging quietly in 2024, Ashen Sun represents a reawakening of Scandinavian dark rock, now tinged with synthetic cold-wave elements and cinematic soundscapes.

The debut single “Faith’s Funeral” sets the stage for Ashen Sun’s forthcoming full-length album, expected in early 2026. For fans of gothic and dark alternative music, this is a project that promises both reverence for the past and a bold step into the future.
