The world of heavy metal is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic drummers. Les Binks, former drummer of legendary British metal band JUDAS PRIEST, has passed away at the age of 73. The news was confirmed by the band on Monday, April 14, via a heartfelt social media post.

“We are deeply saddened about the passing of Les and send our love to his family, friends and fans," the statement read. "The acclaimed drumming he provided was first class — demonstrating his unique techniques, flair, style and precision.
Thank you Les — your acclaim will live on…”

Binks’ tenure with Judas Priest may have been brief, but it was undeniably impactful. He played drums on some of the band’s most influential albums — “Stained Class” (1978), “Hell Bent for Leather” (also known as Killing Machine in the UK), and the electrifying live album “Unleashed in the East” (1979). These recordings are cornerstones of heavy metal history, showcasing Binks' technical prowess and high-octane energy behind the kit.

His departure from the band followed tensions surrounding compensation for the live album. In a candid recollection shared with former Priest guitarist K.K. Downing’s website, Binks revealed the rift that led to his exit:

“The making of the live album caused a rift between me and [PRIEST’s] manager and ultimately led to my decision to leave the band. I just didn't see the point in continuing to work with a band whose manager didn't want me to receive any payment for that live album... It’s a classic heavy metal live album which I believe eventually went platinum, and he didn’t want me to receive a penny for it.”

Despite the fallout, Binks remained respected by his former bandmates and fans alike. In 2022, his legacy was officially honored when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside other current and former members of Judas Priest, including Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill, Scott Travis, K.K. Downing, and the late Dave Holland.

Reflecting on the honor in a 2022 interview with The Metal Crypt, Binks described the experience as “a bit surreal” and shared how the reunion with the band, including Downing, was a smooth and professional one:

“I never fell out with anyone in the band. I fell out with the band’s management, but not with them… We just decided, we are here at the invitation of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Let’s just be professional about this… That’s what we did.”

His connection with Downing was rekindled in 2017 after decades apart, with Downing later calling him "one of the greatest drummers in the world and a good friend and a great guy."

Les Binks' drumming style combined technical precision with a thunderous, unmistakable energy that helped define Judas Priest's sound during a crucial phase of their ascent. His work continues to inspire generations of metal drummers.

The heavy metal community joins Judas Priest in mourning the loss of a true legend. Rest in power, Les Binks — your rhythms will echo forever.
