Mexico City is a real hotbed for heavy metal music in all its different guises. Whether you want it extreme, blackened and deathly or something more traditional, the capital of Mexico has got you covered. One band who have been delivering that latter sound are Voltax who are back for the first time since a pre-pandemic EP in 2019 with their third studio album ‘Ardentis’.

Those who like their heavy metal to have that 80’s trad metal sound coupled with an underbelly of bludgeoning speed metal will find that once again, Voltax have delivered the goods. ‘Ardentis’ is a megaton leviathan of breakneck metal played in the way that trad fans have become accustomed to. This is a record that has flourishing twin guitar leads, galloping rhythms, screeching soaring vocals and more leather than a Judas Priest themed sex shop, to which there is nothing wrong with it. Through tracks such as ‘La bestia interior’, ‘Guardián de las eras’ and the title track, Voltax show that ‘Ardentis’ has all the appeal of Enforcer, Skull Fist and Riot City as well as more classic sounds of Judas Priest, Barón Rojo and early Helloween.

Voltax have delivered an excellent third album. It shows the Mexican band consolidating their sound into the trad metal world. If you’re the sort of person expecting something new, then you won’t find it here, but what you will find is heaps of nostalgia and top-quality music that will be played over and again.
