The Aura are a local band born back in 1996, but only after several years did they release their debut ("A Different View From The Same Side" of 2008) and within about a decade they released two more albums. The quartet, despite the few record releases, has always favored quality over quantity and this new album, "Underwater", also reflects this point of view. The sound coordinates are to be found both in the Prog of the 80s and 90s and in the Progressive Metal of about the same decade, where the melodic vein rather than the technical one prevails. Aura are refined musicians and their way of making Prog mirrors colleagues like Riverside for the decidedly caressing vocal style ("Lost Over Time") and the suffused atmospheres, however, even the more pop Pink Floyd are called to order thanks to intense choral installations that blend perfectly with the roughness of the guitars in episodes such as "Keep It Safe". Delving into the disc, the group decides to indulge themselves by pushing on the aggressiveness of the rhythms ("On Time") by setting up surprising walls of sound (the fiery groove of "Eternal Bliss"), but the main influence comes directly from the American Prog Metal school Fates Warning. The heaviness is dosed with a dropper favoring sensitivity (“Time To Live” and “My Last Words To You”), but above all the technique is used to create, to amaze and satisfy as in the guitar and instrumental evolutions of the wonderful “Promises” . The listener is never abandoned and is always stimulated to perceive every detail. If you really want to find a fault, it is the excessive similarity of many passages that create a sort of continuous deja vu that can be annoying. A good job poised between craftsmanship and the desire to amaze, but not as surprising as expected. allaroundmetal
