Milwaukee, WI – Long-running death metal veterans Viogression are set to self-release their mind-expanding new album, Thaumaturgic Veil , on July 11, 2025 . More than just a return to form, the band’s fourth full-length effort is a profound sonic exploration of esoteric consciousness, vibrational energy, and death metal’s raw, chaotic potential.
Formed in 1988 and steeped in the blood-soaked roots of early ‘90s death metal, Viogression have long earned a reputation for pummeling heaviness and philosophical depth. Thaumaturgic Veil takes this legacy to a new dimension—literally.
Thaumaturgic Veil is not just an album, but what the band describes as “a metaphysical sonic construct”—an alchemical work that merges sludgy, relentless death metal with arcane theory. Inspired by occult traditions, alchemy, and Thelemic mysticism, the album channels human consciousness and vibrational frequency into something that transcends standard genre fare.
Its themes dive into the binary architecture of reality—consciousness and subconsciousness, order and chaos—using music as the medium through which intent reshapes perception. Modal melodies, microtonal inflections, and dissonant textures reflect the union of Nuit and Hadit, drawing upon the ancient Enûma Elish and modern chaos magick alike.
This is death metal as magickal working —a psychospiritual journey that turns brutal audio into inner transformation.
Sonically, Viogression remain true to their grisly roots. Fans of Obituary , Autopsy , and Morbid Saint will recognize the swampy riffs, pummeling blastbeats, and the doomy grind that first made Expound & Exhort (1990) a cult classic. Yet there’s an added layer of complexity and intent in Thaumaturgic Veil .
Drawing comparisons to Death , Pestilence , and even Morbid Angel , Viogression inject their signature Midwest grit into each track. Dense riffs are met with surgical precision and dynamic song structures. The album is guttural yet cerebral—designed to engage not only the body, but the mind and spirit.
With 19 tracks, Thaumaturgic Veil is an immersive experience. The opener “ Enûma Elish Ilū ” sets the tone with modal drones evoking infinite potential, while “ Renumeration ” has already been approved for airplay thanks to its balance of accessibility and depth.
Other standout moments include “ Vulnus Sclopetarium ,” featuring a guest guitar solo by Chris Monroy , and “ Buki’s Dream ”—a haunting track originally recorded in 1994 by the late Bryan Jaeger , embellished for this release as a tribute to his legacy.
Guest vocals from Steve Wilson and studio contributions from Chris Djuricic , Dave Otero , and Erik Schultek round out a production team deeply embedded in the extreme music community.
