A Long-Awaited Possibility: New Music from System of a Down?
While the band gears up for these massive summer stadium shows, fans have long awaited new music from System of a Down. The band's last full-length album, Hypnotize, was released in 2005, and despite their intermittent touring since their hiatus in 2011, a follow-up album remains elusive.
In a recent interview with São Paulo's 89 FM A Rádio Rock, drummer John Dolmayan and bassist Shavarsh "Shavo" Odadjian discussed the possibility of new music. Dolmayan shared that while a new System of a Down album is unlikely in the near future, he remains open to the idea. He explained, "It'll happen organically if it happens — it'll be something that we just decide to do together without overthinking it." Shavo echoed this sentiment, saying that it would need to happen naturally, without any formal announcements or expectations.
Both members hinted that they have some unfinished songs in their vault, which could potentially make their way into a future project. However, there is no current plan for a new System of a Down album, and the band continues to focus on their live performances and individual projects.
The Manifesto: Serj Tankian's Vision for the Band
In his recently released memoir, Down With The System, frontman Serj Tankian addressed the band's dynamics and the challenges they've faced in collaborating over the years. Tankian revealed that while he's always been open to the possibility of new music, he believes that for a new album to work, the band would need to embrace a more egalitarian approach. This would mean equal sharing of ideas, creative input, and the vision for the band's future.
Tankian shared a story from his memoir where he pitched a new vision for the band, but his ideas didn't resonate with his bandmates at the time. Despite this, he remains hopeful that one day they could find common ground and create new music together. "It would have to happen without thinking: 'Let's do it.' We go in, we don't announce it, we don't talk about it, we do it," said Shavo.
Tankian's reflections also delved into the personal and creative tensions that have shaped the band's evolution. "We started covering each other's territory. I was encouraging Daron [Malakian] to write more lyrics, because I believe in artistic growth," Tankian explained. "But it was disappointing that I didn't get that same encouragement in return."
Despite the challenges and the long gap since their last album, the members of System of a Down have expressed their ongoing respect for each other and their love for performing together. Fans continue to hold out hope for new music from the band, but as of now, no official plans have been made.
An Unforgettable 2025: System of a Down Live in Concert
While the possibility of a new album remains uncertain, System of a Down's upcoming stadium shows are a must-see for metal fans around the world. With Deftones, Avenged Sevenfold, and Korn as their co-headliners, these performances will showcase some of the most influential bands in modern metal, with Polyphia and WISP providing additional support.
Tickets for these highly anticipated shows will go on sale in December, and with such an incredible lineup, fans are encouraged to secure their tickets early. Whether or not a new System of a Down album materializes, these summer 2025 stadium shows will undoubtedly be an unforgettable celebration of the band’s legacy and their incredible impact on the rock and metal scenes.
Stay tuned for more updates as the summer 2025 tour approaches — and who knows, maybe we’ll get some new music from System of a Down along the way.
