Jane's Addiction has officially cancelled the remainder of their 2024 tour, with the band announcing that they are taking "some time away as a group." This news comes after a tumultuous few days following an onstage altercation between frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro, leading to growing concerns about the band's future.
The trouble began on September 13 during a performance at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston, MA, where video footage showed Farrell aggressively confronting Navarro mid-show. Farrell, clearly frustrated, bumped into Navarro, got in his face, and even threw a punch before bassist Eric Avery and a roadie intervened to diffuse the situation. The altercation took fans by surprise, as the band had only recently reunited in its classic lineup for the first time since 2010, with Farrell, Navarro, Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins kicking off a tour and releasing their first single together in 34 years.
In the days that followed, Jane's Addiction issued a public apology for the incident and canceled their next show in Bridgeport, CT. Farrell's wife took to Instagram to explain that her husband had been sick, frustrated by technical issues with the sound levels, and overwhelmed by the rowdy crowd. According to her, Farrell felt that the band's volume was drowning out his voice, and he regrettably took his frustration out on Navarro.
On September 16, Farrell issued his own statement, expressing remorse for his behavior. "This weekend has been incredibly difficult, and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family, and friends for my actions during Friday's show," Farrell said. "Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation."
Despite Farrell's apology, the band made the decision to halt the tour and take a hiatus. A joint statement from Navarro, Avery, and Perkins highlighted their concerns about Farrell's well-being, citing "a continuing pattern of behavior" and the challenges posed by his mental health. "We have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour," the bandmates wrote. "Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative."
The band emphasized their deep regret over letting down their fans but stated that they could not continue in an environment that compromised their safety and ability to perform. "Our hearts are broken," concluded the statement from Navarro, Avery, and Perkins.
Fans who purchased tickets for the canceled shows have been instructed to seek refunds from their original point of purchase, while those who bought tickets through third-party sellers like StubHub or SeatGeek are encouraged to contact those platforms directly.
While this may be the end of Jane's Addiction's current chapter, it remains unclear if and when the band will reunite again in the future.
