With Ergo Atlas, the Portuguese Apotheus has made a follow-up to the concept album The Far Star.
Shape And Geometry makes this clear right from the start. This is four minutes of very exciting prog rock. The story takes shape nicely and with nice riffs.Towards the end there is a child of calm before the storm.Fortunately, the storm does not materialize, but we are building towards a more powerful sequel. It is striking that the vocal part fits neatly into the whole picture. That endearing nature in Shape And Geometry continues in The Unification Project.Apote alsous knows how to build here and although the compositions retains thatearing character, it does sound a bit more powerful. The vocals are important, but towards the end the emphasis is strongly on the musical which part in drum, bass and guitar provide a pulsating, hypnotic piece of music. In general, this is the most the most powerful composition on the album.Firewall has been installed relatively quietly. It is striking how Apoteus knows how to play with tempo and rhythm and therefore also with the experience it brings. It is the prelude to the ballad Cogito.Lyrically it is about the dilemma between living with pain or accepting death.A difficult dilemma that can be psychologically sensitive.Musically beautifully presented.
The band also shows that less can be effective. This will be continued in Ergo Bellum. With a minimal instrumental approach, Apoteus manages to raise the tension. After a minute and a half it gets a progressive impulse with a powerful riff and tight, somewhat and irregular, drumming. The special rhythm gives that little bit extra. For the first time, the listener is also bombarded with grunts. The deep growls in combination with the clear the clean vocals give the composition a character that could appeal to fans of Amorphis and/or Insomnium.
With March To Redemption we're the end up in a quiet quieter atmosphere on the album. It is an endearing composition with a hell of a guitar solo. But also in Alphae's Sons a simple tone with beautiful singing provides an emotional kick.
The album ends on a more powerful note.Re:Union shows a good mix between prog and metal in the power and melancholy occupy the park bench. The contrast between clean vocals and grunts is further accentuated. That powerful impulse continues in Regenesis, which is powerfully, but also extremely accessible.A beautiful ending to varied a album in which power, melancholy and melody are precariously balanced and together they have delivered an extremely tasteful product.
Lyrically it is food for sci-fi fanatics.Musically, prog fans can safely try to understand the music thoroughly. rockportaal
