There exist certain pieces that serve to accentuate its own vanity, for even though the outer layer may seem enticing it is but merely a façade, adorned with frivolous aesthetic, but lacking any soul. In the spectrum of music, it can be likened to those who try to mask their melodies in order to appear nefarious or evoke an uncanny spirit, instead, all that is fostered is a thought that dissolves into nothingness, void of any emotion to transcend it into something palpable to the senses.
“From the North” by Wolfcross carves a monument where your soul can take refuge within its walls, to feed upon its malefic energy, invoking the blackened speech of Black Metal coalesced with the unhinged, raw human soul, fashioning a jewel to anoint the crown of consciousness, to absorb its stygian energy.
The beauty that is imbued onto “From The North” arrives in the unification of both vocals and the instrumental architecture to manifest an expressive aura, for through its melodies and the voice that wills its language, the music becomes a tongue for tyranny, lashing its sermon with a virulent candor. Take for instance, tracks such as “Old Sinner” and “Svart Speed Metal” the dissonance released augmented by the vocals breathes life into this structure, fueled by pure contemptuous hate. The motion that the strings adopt, both in its frenzied manner but even the slower portions magnify these dense elements, giving a certain tangibility to its sound, for it can be likened to nails that tear at the flesh, seeking to release that which ravages the soul.
The melodies that surround these tracks become the eucharist for one’s mind, to truly eat upon the obsidian soul from whence the ember of anger is ignited, and from this incendiary inferno, ingest its serpentine spirit. In my opinion, this is the culmination of everything grand on “From the North” for the musical elements serve as a means to dissect the purest strain of human anger, to delve into this wound and expand on its incision, and that which flows from the stigmata becomes the ichor which bestows a bellicostic quality to the album that permeates through one’s listening experience. Short Bio: Wolfcross formed in 2015 by Jonas Bergkvist aka J. B. Vorgoth. Having been an active member of the death metal scene with bands like Desolator, Ending Quest and Soliloquium he needed to channel his anti-christianity and Nordic mythology ideas in another form, namely black metal. A demo was quickly written and recorded and released onto the world the same year as he formed the band. In 2019 a compilation album was released on CD with the bands demo material, whereas the 100 copies quickly sold out. Wolfcross has since gone from a solo project to a full line-up of four and a full-length debut has been in the making. After several successful live shows in Sweden the band are eager to release From the North to the world. Wolfcross is pure Swedish black metal forged in the flames of old and new whereas the band has captured the essence of the Swedish sound from the first wave to the present. The band is already booking shows all over Sweden as this Winter will become just a bit darker as Wolfcross sweeps over the nation. New and old fans of black metal will be sure to check this release out.
