There isn't much to say about NATTSJÄL, but you don't have to. The music matters. We're talking about the debut of a Swedish band led by Jonas Almqvist and Pierre Wilhelmsson, who already make music together with MANEGARM. Then why this project? The musicians themselves say that it's all about having fun with the music, that's why there is no label behind it, everything was mixed and mastered by themselves. So one could call it logical that the result also sounds rougher, more unpolished and...well...evil than with the main band. Here, too, they oscillate between the poles of Black Metal and pathetic Viking Metal, but in this case with a bias toward Black Metal. Of course, that has nothing to do with the Norwegian school.

It reminds me a little of the relationship between WINTERSUN and ENSIFERUM, back when you could still take both bands, or, I should say, when I still did. Because the opener 'Valkyria' picks up exactly on this kind of music. Terrific. The mixing ratio is right here, but unfortunately it doesn't stay that way. 'A Much Of Sorrow' wants to come across as black and grim, but doesn't grab me at all. The title track takes the same line and fails similarly, albeit on a slightly higher level. And that's because of the dudelparts. Whenever Klargesang is unpacked, when it fiddles and folks, when it gets epic, then it works. Finally, 'Hostmane' could appear under the MANEGARM banner as well. The rest are completely irrelevant interludes for me, more noise than music.

Of course it's not a bad album. The general brevity is to be commended and if there were six or seven tracks like 'Valkyria', I would be thrilled. However, the question remains as to what exactly is to be said with this publication. In any case, the synthesis of party-ready Black Metal doesn't really work.

So what remains is the fun that the musicians had with their music and that some fans may also have. And that's actually reason enough. powermetal
