Nattsjäl - Of Chaos Supreme - Reviewed By musiczine ! Check it out here at this link: https://musiczine.net/nl/ontdekkingen/item/90276-of-chaos-supreme.html
Nattsjäl is the new band of Jonas Almqvist and Pierre Wilhelmsson, two of the founding members of the Swedish metal band Månegarm. Both have left that band at different times. In their new band they take care of a lot together: coming up with concept, writing music and lyrics, grunts, guitars, bass, … 'Of Chaos Supreme' is their first full album after the promising EP 'Under A Blood Red Sky'. .
The new band name means 'night soul' and is a reference to the song 'Nattsjäl, Drömsjäl' by Månegarm. As Nattsjäl, Almqvist and Wilhelmsson are joined on this album by Thomas Vikström (Therion, Candlemass, …) for clean vocals, Jan Liljekvist (another ex-Månegarm) on violin and Robert Lindgren for guitar solos.
The female guest vocals on this album also bear the Månegarm stamp with Stina Engelbrecht, who already did about the same for that band. Even more references to their original band: the Belgian Kris Verwimp was the permanent supplier of artwork there and for 'Of Chaos Supreme' he is also the same. We also have a double 'Belgian' connection with Verwimp and Engelbrecht. Engelbrecht was co-composer of “Magical Sensation”, the song with which Katy Satyn participated in Eurosong for our country in 2008.
In the themes, Almqvist and Wilhelmsson stick to the familiar: folklore and Vikings. They pride themselves on having done just about everything on this album themselves, with no label budget, including mixing and mastering.
The mix is unfortunately one of the weak points of this album, next to Almqvist's not so pleasant grunts. I also miss the strict hand and authority of a producer who can adjust and who throws half-good ideas in the trash. If you disregard those points, you do have a decent album: good song structures, decent lyrics in English and Swedish, a nice, original mix of folk, black and heavy metal, excellent performances by Vikström and Lindberg, … That they don't come out better in production and mix, is really a missed opportunity. The best track of this album for me is “Höstmåne”.
When you've been at a certain level of success for a long time, it's sometimes hard to start from scratch. In this new band, the protagonists try a little too hard to be a continuation of their old band and apparently things can't go fast enough. Nattsjäl has a greater potential in this line-up than they show on 'Of Chaos Supreme'. The next release will probably sound a lot better. musiczine
