DEATHPATH are a Death Metal band from Palma de Mallorca in Spain.  Formed in 2016, this is their sophomore album released by Kvlt und Kaos Productions. “We're DEATHPATH and we speak Death Metal,” it proclaims on their Facebook page and it’s as blunt and forthright a statement as their music. This is unashamed old-school no frills Death Metal and starts off with “Intro” which a lot of albums have these days. It’s decent with thunder, rain and gunshots joined by a solitary guitar mantra before building into a wall of sound.

“Warmachine” is the first proper track where a lumbering riff morphs into a thrashier vein before the vocals come in. Unfortunately, the mainly undecipherable vocal rasps, grunts, cookie-monster style vocals fail to impress and Mario has an irritating higher-pitched inflection to some of the lines which I found detracted from the music. Musically though it’s very well produced and both guitars complement each other without over dominating the mix which is solid enough. This song has a nice fiery lead towards the end of the track.

“Morbid Masquerade” is a bit repetitive and the lead on this track is a bit scratchy and tinny though “Purified” is much better. it’s doomy slower riff becomes a heavy pummeling palm-muted riff and there’s a much better lead later in the track which compliments the heavy rhythm well. “Butcher – Fresh Meat” starts with a squealing lead intro over a fast thrashy riff. It’s the only track which really has any semblance of a chorus over a heavy riff.

(Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum- Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum) Fresh
(Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum- Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum) Meat”

Ok so I didn’t say it was sophisticated but it adds some degree of memorability which prior songs lack. “Hate-Within” is the second longest track at 6 ½ mins but at least has some dynamic change from a rolling riff which morphs into a fairly melodic one. Two-thirds of the way through it has a nice melodic lead before thrashing away then returning to its death metal roots. By the time I got to the seventh track, it all starts to get a bit samey and the vocals just continue to irritate. “Coward Left To Die” is short and punchy with a thrashier feel which I quite liked and the 71/2 minute “Confess” has some heavy thrashing guitar over double-kick drums and starts with a bass intro.

Whilst the musicianship is competent, the vocals aren’t great and I’ve heard much better Death Metal vocalists to be honest. The songs aren’t particularly memorable either and having listened to a number of Death Metal bands now, this criticism can’t be levelled at the genre itself. The production is certainly the strongest point of the album but there’s nothing here to make me want to listen to it again.. If old school Death Metal is your bag then you may like it and score it a bit higher but for me, I was generally underwhelmed. metal-temple
