Active since 2015, the Polish Devilpriest were born from the meeting of musicians with a good experience behind them in the world of extreme metal, serving bands such as Anima Damnata, Mord, Blitzkrieg, HellBorn, Embrional, Imperator and Raging Death . After a first album released in 2017 but above all after a line-up earthquake that reduced the band to a duo, Devilpriest are back today with 'In Repugnant Adoration', a work involving singer/guitarist Tom Hermies and drummer Necro Docre . And it is precisely the latter that leads us to the discovery of the new record.

For our readers who are new to Devilpriest, can you briefly explain your band's music?

“(Necro Docre) Devilpriest was formed in 2015 by me, singer and guitarist Tom Hermies, and bassist Durtal Tot. The intent was to play a classic death metal, the one that raised hell in the nineties . In 2017 we made our debut on record with 'Devil Inspired Chants', then some differences of views meant that Devilpriest remained a duo, and with this line-up we recorded 'In Repugnant Adoration' today”.

'In Repugnant Adoration' is your second album. Can you introduce it to us?

“This album is a blend of heavy riffs, complex arrangements and a never ending drumbeat. With a high dose of probability you can find a unique atmosphere, which is not easily found in current productions.

What are the main differences between 'In Repugnant Adoration' and the debut album?

“The debut album 'Devil Inspired Chants' released in 2017 was the result of a compromise between the three members of the band, each of whom had a very personal vision of what our music should be like, with the result that the songs in the end they were very varied. 'In Repugnant Adoration' was instead composed by two of us who share a more common vision of what Devilpriest should sound like. Therefore, the songs of the new album are more coherent and free of accidental riffs, stylistically instead it is more focused on a 'blackened death metal' leaving behind that modern death metal that affected the previous album”.

How was the process of working on the disc but above all how was it working with Haldor Grunberg as director, a technician known for having worked with important names such as Behemoth, Dopelord, Me And That Man, Azarath…

“We started working on the record again as a trio, but after an unsuccessful struggle to reach a compromise we had to split up as a duo. From that point the writing process gained momentum and took several months. The recording took several weeks because each instrument was recorded in a different place depending on how we perceived the ideal sound for a given instrument. When all the tracks were finished we did a rough mix which was then used as a guideline for the final mix with Haldor who was brought forward by Odium Records as the right person to help us achieve our goals.”

What did you find most challenging about recording 'In Repugnant Adoration'?

“I think my way of approaching the instrument. I always arrange the drum parts to the limit of my current ability, so it's always a challenge to get perfection out of every track."

Were there any particular lyrical themes that you explored throughout the songs on 'In Repugnant Adoration'?

“'In Repugnant Adoration' is a completely conceptual album in terms of lyrics. The six songs on the album represent the six steps to inner darkness. A journey, or a search for metamorphosis through enlightenment, distraction and joy. You have to explore it in your own way."

In this context, what does 'The Black Milk of Lilith' represent?

“Lilith's black milk is a poison that is used (in small quantities) to approach the edge of existence. Self-destruction awaits one step further, under Set's eye."

Is it 'Walpurgis'?

“'Walpurgis' is indeed a joy. After crossing the boundary of existence, the mind is torn apart and gets rid of the burden of time. When one realizes how to perceive the world without false limits, joy comes”.

But is it an abstract concept or is there something concrete at the basis of this path that you propose in your texts?

“Nothing abstract, everything absolutely real. I myself followed the six steps described in the songs of the album, now I'm a different person”.

How important is the musical side for Devilpriest and how much the lyrical side?

“There is no one without the other. The sound, the image, the words create an album that can truly be explored in terms of art. Devilpriest's is not music to be listened to while washing dishes or doing household chores. It is the key to the gate of self-awareness, but it takes all the senses to find the lock."

Does this artistic discourse also apply to the artwork of the new album?

"Absolutely! The artwork was created by BMS Illustration and fully represents the lyrical content of the album. Similar to the music, it was done step by step, adding different layers. The artwork is a medium, an intermediary between the listener and its inherent darkness. A means to be used on the journey to repulsive worship. For some it can be an entrance to hell”.

You come from Poland, a country that over the years has been able to churn out first-rate bands in the extreme world panorama, I am thinking of Behemoth, Batushka, Vader, Thy Desease, Decapitated, Graveland just to name a few… How do you explain the fact that black and death metal have taken root so well in your country?

“I really have no idea, but it seems that there are some countries or simple geographic regions where certain genres of metal take root better. Certainly the scene in Poland has grown a lot over the years, some time ago the bands turned to foreign labels, today the Polish labels have grown a lot and guarantee great visibility to local bands also abroad, with the consequence that more money circulates to promote local groups and the scene is greatly strengthened”

What will be the Devilpriest's next steps? What should we expect from them?

“Finally we have squared up the line up and can promote the new album live. We don't have a tour set up yet but we are confident that once the record is released there will be concert offers. It's been a long time since the last album and we need to remind the world of our existence again. Luckily you won't have to wait that long for the next album. We are not wasting any time and are already working on the successor to 'In Repugnant Adoration'”.
