Although often associated with sprawling complex virtuosity, progressive metal can be quite a divisive genre as those who love one aspect quite often despise other elements of it. One band from south-western Italy are Aura and this year has the band returning for first time since 2015 with their fourth studio album ‘Underwater’.

For those familiar with what Aura are capable of will know that with ‘Underwater’, Aura delivers an album which is stuffed to the brim with that classic progressive metal sound. This is not a release which pushes into the realms of djent or bringing in elements of more extreme metal. Instead, with ‘Underwater’, Aura let their musicality shine with an entertaining release which shows that the listener does not need a degree in mathematics to enjoy. Therefore, ‘Underwater’ is a hell of a fun where tracks such as ‘Lights Behind the Clouds’, ‘Time to Live’ and ‘Lost over Time’ show a band with all the impressive nature of Dream Theater, Leprous and Porcupine Tree. Furthermore, the cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Astronomy Domine’ is the best cover of that song that you’ll hear this side of Voivod.

Those who like their progressive metal to have an element of commerciality to it will find a very good album in ‘Underwater’. This isn’t an album which is convoluted or trying to be better than it is by appealing to the Rain Men of Prog. Instead, anyone who wants a good album of prog metal should take a look at ‘Underwater’ because it will not disappoint. - Metal Digest !
