Black/Death/Thrash with lots of groove!

I have to admit that before "Psalm Satani" I hadn't heard a long player, let alone a song by the Americans, so I was able to approach the matter with a completely unbiased mind. I only took note of the style designation as Black/Death Metal from the documents. But what's that supposed to mean? NECROPHOBIC is also referred to as "Black/Death", as well as REVENGE or ARCHGOAT. The result was that SATHANAS does not hit either of the two notches mentioned. Rather, there is a very large proportion of Thrash Metal in the mix. But the mixture of Black, Death and Thrash Metal isn't impetuous and chaotic, but very calculated and precise, which might spoil one's joy again.

So the eight songs actually all follow the same scheme and mainly move in mid-tempo, only to break out into faster realms in between. The drummer blasts his way through the refrain of 'Altar Of Heaven' or the roots of thrash are uncovered in 'Calling Forth The Darkness'. Apart from that you are mainly dealing with top notch groove and it is played really well, you actually have a constant urge to move your head to the beat. The disc's only flaw is the similarity of the songs. They are all composed similarly and there is no variety here. Sometimes a song that blasts through, sometimes a dark melody typical for Black Metal would have done the whole thing good.

But even without these little things, the eleventh album of the quadruplet crosses the finish line as a high-class album that doesn't have to expect/fear any hymns of praise, but also no slating. - POWERMETAL
