Review by Sandre the Giant

Instrumental progressive death metal Obscure Form is the brainchild of Rochester, NY’s Bill Rotach. Handling drums, bass and guitar on ‘Strife’, the debut EP, clearly the guy has a lot of talent and what you’re about to delve into is technically very impressive, but does it have the heart and soul to get past just the musicality? It is out now through Bandcamp.

Opener ‘Colossus’ feels like more than an intro piece with the ferocious guitar work scything across propulsive bass and an unbelievable drumming performance, and even a dash of keyboard/organ maybe? I really liked that organ moment, but I’m an easy mark for that stuff. ‘Atrocity’ follows with some nice thick riffs and some eerie melody lines that reminds me quite a bit of modern tech death bands like Archspire or even maybe some Gojira, while ‘Extinction’ has a flourish of melodic detours that trace their way through magnificent soloing and a barrage of drums in a rather Jeff Loomis style. ‘Revenant’ starts off brutally before spiralling leads spray at will into the ether, and we get some dissonant acoustics at the end. ‘Ruin’ has another flash or two of Nevermore but there’s also quite a bit of Black Dahlia Murder in there too.

I feel like this had the potential to be nothing but a wanky vanity project, buth the musical skills on show are fairly impressive and the songs all feel like they have an identity. ‘Strife’ is an impressive, if little short debut offering from Obscure Form, and hopefully this leads to more in the future because I really like this. It shows quite a bit of character for having no vocals and I think that is to be commended. - The Killchain Blog
