Fumigation is a band that would be easy to dismiss at first glance. A death metal band themed around insects with song titles like ‘Mosquitoes in my Taquitos’ doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that what you’re about to listen to is a serious artistic offering. However, what their latest album ‘Structural Extermination’ lacks in lyrical gravity it makes up for in musical thoughtfulness.

The album opens as unfair assumptions would expect, with a standard brutal death metal presentation, but if you give the album a chance it opens up into so much more. By the time you get to ‘Pinworms and Anal Burns’ you will have heard several inventive rhythm interludes and even an uncanny knack for infusing the death metal with melodic rock n roll inspired transitions.

The band isn’t afraid to slow down or even put in clean sections in their songs. It’s quite refreshing and makes the heavy riffs hit a lot harder than they normally would have. When I think back on my listening experience none of those heavy riffs really come to mind, but the clean that leads to the crescendo of ‘Like Moths to Flame’ does. The epic ending of ‘Servant of the Queen’ comes to mind with its ominous synth and guitar leads. Fumigation really shows what they’re capable of when it comes to composition.
