Jesse Beisner working under the project name “Nomadic Narwhal” brings the second part of the “Fathoms” EP series. Moving further down the water column to the mesopelagic Midnight Zone is envisaged with a darker and edgier sonic palette than its predecessor, which was an evocation of the warmth and relative safety of the Sunlight Zone. Opening track “Moulin” follows straight on from “Whale Fall” which closed part one with a continuation of the same piano figure. There is an almost instantaneous turn to significantly harsher guitar riffs using classic Black Metal tonality. Epic sonic visualisation with sweeping contrast in texture from the guitar parts to orchestrated voicings and delicate glockenspiel this flows unbroken into series title track “Fathoms” which brings exemplary Dave Young/Devin Townsend tones and a feeling of revelling in a euphoric darkness.

This leads to the closing track “Odyssey” which builds from a simple rhythmic chug to explode into a Doomy plaintive dirge with colossal guitar that finally releases the shackles and ups the pace with a climactic double-time charge replete with shred and continuo strings and then Bam! It stops mid-flow as if the tape ran out before the song has ended, leaving you salivating for part three.

This is a step-change into darker territory without heading too far down, leaving headroom for more experimentation in musical colour. Short and to the point, this is a great listen for fans of Progressive and Symphonic Metal. - Metal Digest

Fathoms is a four part concept album exploring the different atmospheric zones in the ocean. Starting from the surface and ranging to the sea floor, each pelagic zone has its own curiosities and mystique. In short, Nomadic dedicates 3 songs per zone to musically capture the atmospheres encountered on a journey from topside to the deepest chasms of the ocean.
