I discovered Anwar about 20 years ago through his exceptional debut album ‘Abstract Point of View.”  Since then, Anwar has been quite busy writing ‘Tale of the Lunatics.’ I say this because there is no way he wrote this in a relatively short time frame. He may have been born in Pakistan, but he is, ahem, not of this earth. IYKYK.

‘Tale…’ is a concept album chronicling the story of the fictional angel Afaiel. His story is compelling and disturbingly familiar at times, with the spoken word interludes painting the picture. Musically, however, it is a far grander affair. The album is a glorious coalescence of Prog and Power Metal, cinema, a bit of Jazz, and more wondrous rabbit holes than you could possibly want.

Songs range from hyperaggressive to gracefully violent, with Anwar’s guitar speeds rivaling Petrucci and the gentle nuances of Eric Johnson. Even with the provided storyline, there are only a few vocals, thus clearing the way for endless visuals. Each song/chapter has its own life. Some with exquisitely beautiful instrumentation and some with unbridled rage in the guise of high art. Many layers and many stories, and with each revisit, something new is gained.

I am aware there are always people behind the scenes. Still, there are occasions when a solo artist (mostly) lacking input from others may make tedious, almost self-serving music. Not so, in this case. I rarely say this, but I’m glad he went it alone. Highly recommended. - Metal Digest
