Extinguish The Sun are a young band from Illinois that is mainly active in the Midwest of the USA and plays numerous gigs there – unless another pandemic rages, at least. With Transformations, the musicians now present us with their second full-time record, which was created especially during the Corona lockdown.
The combo stands for alternative metal with melodic punch and progressive elements, their influences range from Mastodon to Megadeth to Pantera. Dust-dry sound backdrops, which are otherwise more likely to be found in desert rock or stoner metal, serve as the basis for the song structures of the Americans.
The devil is in the details
The nine songs on Transformations combine guitar melodies with driving rhythm work and psychedelic approaches. Extinguish The Sun have audibly meticulously fine-tuned their songs, because both the transitions and the overall structures of the songs themselves testify to a high degree of songwriting-specific detail work.
The Opener Sold already indicates the direction, although this song is one of the brisk and more melodic tracks on the album. Singer Jeremy Miller moves here in the higher positions of his vocal spectrum, but in general he feels most at home in the middle. The song also has a slight post punk attitude, as you can hear HERE.
American Metal Buffet
Overall, Extinguish The Sun serves us progressive metal of the American style, which has only a few surprises in store, but is perfectly implemented. Colors, for example, is a riff-driven number between sluggish melodies and catchy hooklines, while Planet Nowhere sounds much more intricate.
The final And The Signal Fades also brings epic melodies of the Scandinavian school, but without distorting the dry basic character of the band's own sound. The inclined metal gourmet is thus served a rich ami buffet, where he can hear his fill in peace. The big Gusto piece is missing, but there is nothing inedible about it.
Conclusion
Extinguish The Sun have worked on themselves, and you can hear that too. Transformations is a pure alternative/prog metal record with a dust-dry character and excursions into the psychedelic, on which genre fans should discover one or the other song for themselves.

Short Bio:
Extinguish The Sun are an Illinois based metal band formed in the fall of 2015. Having emerged out of the creative primordial ooze of the Northwestern Illinois metal scene, the band rapidly built a name for themselves. Their range of influences spans from classic NWOBHM by way of Pantera and Megadeth and even more modern acts like Mastodon, Baroness, Clutch and Torche. All in all it makes for a potent combination of sounds that has terrorized clubs and punk houses across the region. They’re a metal bands metal band.
After a few years of hard work, Extinguish The Sun released their first full length, Antihero in 2017. A couple years later in 2019 they released their EP, Oceans. Both of these offerings had tracks that were featured on the Reverbnation home page, a massive accolade for an emerging act. This fueled countless killer shows around the region. In 2020, a year cursed by the coronavirus pandemic the band stayed busy, releasing a live recording from the nationally broadcast NPR show, “Sessions From Studio A” where they were the first and, to date, only metal band to play the show.
During lockdown Extinguish The Sun stayed hard at work writing a new album. This record promises to be a massive step forward for the group. It builds on the bands core sound in a way that continues to push the boundaries. With the gradual return of live music, they hope to play live as much as possible. A new era is coming for these Illinois madmen. Join them on their quest or be left in the dust.
