THE BEAST

Today,  Eisenwald  sets March 25th as the international release date for  Heltekvad 's striking debut album,  Morgenrødens Helvedesherre , on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette tape formats.

Formed in 2020,  Heltekvad  is a three-piece featuring members of some of Denmark's finest recent acts such as Afsky,  Solbrud , Sunken, and Morild. While the sound of  Heltekvad  certainly shares the passion on display in the aforementioned projects - no doubt a result of the shared members behind each entity - what sets them apart is their approach to songwriting and crafting truly medieval soundscapes. This is partially shown through the medieval instrumental interludes, which are tastefully scattered across  Morgenrødens Helvedesherre , but more fully embodied by the epic, at times even heroic-sounding melodies carried by the guitars. There is an element of unbridled wilderness to be found on these seven tracks, each one containing interesting twists and turns that are sure to keep listeners returning for repeat listens.

While the bold and occasionally unorthodox use of melody by the guitars is certainly a highlight on  Morgenrødens Helvedesherre , it is the rabid vocal performance of Ole Luk that provides the album with another note of individuality, as the occasionally tortured howls and rasps fit the album's unrestrained yet simultaneously triumphant aesthetic perfectly. The record boasts an incredibly direct yet surprisingly immersive production job that manages to be balanced, raw, and organic as well as aggressive while never straying into excessive harshness, with a generous low end that is somewhat atypical for the genre, but works perfectly for the sound of  Heltekvad , as it keeps the mix grounded. The drums manage to sound pummeling yet never sterile, varying from dynamic blasts to more stomping rhythms and showcasing an incredible arsenal of flawlessly executed fills, providing these tracks with the necessary rhythmic variety that is frequently neglected by other acts.
