Directly from Lithuania comes the debut of a new (not really but almost, since it all started in 2016), although apparently every decision is made by this Vitalis 'Don Vito' Kairiūkštis, so it is more correct to speak of one-man bands (increasingly present in the underground scene). His project is called Songs From Black Spirit and the album in question is called "I Am Who I Am". In this case it is an impressive work divided into two CDs dedicated to a sort of very dry progressive metal, which partly refers to the 80s flirting with some forays into melodic / power metal.
We need to clarify immediately by bringing up the cover of the album which, sorry to say, is really badly done and the music itself unfortunately has many gaps. In the meantime, making his debut with a double album is a titanic undertaking for anyone, but the biggest problem are the tragically almost all the same songs that rest on a weak writing and lacking in expressive force. Then the countless guests present are of no use, because none of them succeeds in raising the present poverty. The tracks as a whole are very flat and obvious, with rhythms and riffs heard a thousand times and a totally impersonal voice (the growl is terrible) while the melodies leave the time they find except in very rare cases. The "discreet" episodes are really small: the power / folk metal of "Avalon", the hard rock of "The Wolfman", the blues of “My Devotion, the fast“ World Is Turning ”and some well done solos that appear sporadically. Getting to the end of the two records is really a titanic and distressing undertaking: where the singing is flat, the choruses are not convincing and cannot stay in the lead, the technique is overall average, but nowadays it is difficult to find less and finally boredom assails the most experienced listener already after the first track. It hurts to bury a record, but the truth of the matter is that Mr. Vitalis has to do a lot of work developing personality and powerful writing, because the competition is more and more bloodthirsty and with albums like this you will not go anywhere. There is little to add. If you are a heavy / prog metal fanatic with a tendency to melody and power, give it a try, but be warned that disappointment is around the corner. Nothing done for now. Maybe maturity is yet to come ... fingers will cross! - All Around Metal
The history of Songs From Black Spirit started in 2016. Crazy metal-head, Vitalis ‘Don Vito’ Kairiūkštis, the musician from Vilnius, Lithuania and Spicy Bits Of Scandal front-man, decided to create his first solo album called I Am Who I Am. And things worked out very well working with his friends, many world-known musicians from around the world. The new double CD album is compiled of 19 songs (15 brand new) and as always will be a surprise for listeners and fans alike. Also included are four new, updated versions of older songs by the artist.
The tracks themselves are an atomic cocktail of black and white, love and hate, good and evil. And all this is enhanced by the magic of music. In addition to traditional rock music, the album also features specific folk instruments with modern sound.
