DOWN Return With Crushing “Blood Oath,” Announce First New Album In 19 Years, ‘Volume V’

NEW ORLEANS SLUDGE METAL VETERANS TO RELEASE NEW LP NOVEMBER 20 VIA NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS

New Orleans sludge metal icons DOWN have officially returned with their first new original music in more than a decade.

The band has unveiled “Blood Oath,” a crushing new single that serves as the first preview of its long-awaited sixth studio album, Volume V , which is scheduled for release November 20 via Nuclear Blast Records.

“Blood Oath” immediately sounds like the DOWN fans have been waiting for. Built around a massive, groove-heavy riff, pounding drums and an instantly memorable hook, the track combines the band's trademark Southern sludge attack with a fresh sense of urgency. The song also contains numerous references to DOWN's hometown of New Orleans, giving it an unmistakably local flavor.

“Anybody who's from New Orleans is going to get a kick out of the references to the city,” DOWN frontman Philip H. Anselmo said. “Musically, it's got a big hook. It's a DOWN song, but it takes a turn.”

“Blood Oath” also offers an early indication of the chemistry between the musicians who make up DOWN's current lineup: Anselmo, guitarist Pepper Keenan of CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, guitarist Kirk Windstein of CROWBAR, bassist Pat Bruders of GOATWHORE and drummer Jimmy Bower of EYEHATEGOD.

According to Anselmo, the sessions for Volume V carried a renewed sense of excitement and purpose.

“We were all excited about this,” he explained. “There was a sense of lightness in the air. Everyone's attitude was positive. There was more focus than ever. It just felt fresh again. Each one of us was individually striving for something, and I believe we achieved what we wanted to achieve.”

Anselmo described Volume V as “a journey,” adding that while the album is unmistakably classic DOWN, it also pushes the band into new territory.

Windstein echoed that sentiment, pointing to the chemistry that continues to ignite whenever the members of DOWN get into a room together.

“Everybody played their asses off, wrote great riffs, and Philip is singing amazing,” Windstein said. “There's so much electricity when we get together. To me, it's the same vibe as our debut NOLA , but we've got another 35 years of experience as songwriters.”

That comparison to NOLA is bound to get the attention of longtime DOWN followers. Originally released in 1995, the band's landmark debut helped establish the New Orleans supergroup as one of the defining forces in sludge metal, combining doom-laden riffs, Southern groove and punk-infused aggression into something that still sounds massive decades later.

With “Blood Oath,” DOWN appears ready to tap back into that same chemistry while bringing decades of experience to the equation.

Volume V will feature 10 tracks:

  1. “The Myth”
  2. “Merciful Fate”
  3. “Turn Out The Light”
  4. “The Message”
  5. “Causeway Grief”
  6. “Blood Oath”
  7. “They Walk The Night”
  8. “They Came From Dust”
  9. “Ozz”
  10. “Twice-Told Tales”

DOWN is currently in the midst of a North American tour that will continue through September 4, with additional festival appearances scheduled later in the year.

The band's upcoming dates include appearances at Berzerkus Festival , Aftershock , Sick New World in Fort Worth, Texas, and Decibel Metal & Beer Fest in Denver, where DOWN will perform as headliners.
