JON HARRIS SERVES UP A FUNK-ROCK FEAST WITH NEW “MUSTARD N KETCHUP” PLAYTHROUGH

Canadian instrumental rocker Jon Harris is back in the spotlight, and he isn’t coming quietly. The Edmonton guitarist, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and yes, actual chef, just dropped a brand new playthrough video for his track Mustard N Ketchup, one of the most talked-about cuts from his album Parallel Heart. If you need a reason to get up and move today, this is it.

This new video puts Harris front and center in his natural habitat, showing off the kind of tight, flashy musicianship that makes gearheads lean in and casual listeners start bobbing their heads before they even realize it. Mustard N Ketchup blends rock energy with funk swagger and a dance pulse that feels straight out of the eighties, only rebuilt with modern muscle. It’s a reminder that instrumental music can hit just as hard as any traditional rock anthem.

Harris pulled back the curtain on the inspiration behind the track and dropped some heavy names while he was at it.
“I get asked about this song more than any other on the record, probably because it stands out in a lot of ways. Mustard N Ketchup is my homage to one of my all time favourite producers, Quincy Jones, and the magic he created with Michael Jackson and legendary Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. I’ve always loved the sound of the eighties, and I’ve always loved dance music. To me, it’s the heartbeat of rock, as music should make you move.”

And in true Jon Harris fashion, the title itself also ties back to his second creative life in the kitchen.
“The title is also a nod to my life as a chef, where everything starts with the basic building blocks of flavour. Whether it’s food or music, great things come from a solid foundation.”

Parallel Heart, released in December 2024 through Epictronic, is packed with the kind of storytelling most bands need a vocalist to achieve. Harris does it with feel, texture, and arrangements that shift from slick grooves to soaring solos. Even without a single lyric, the record digs into themes of connection, conflict, ambition, and the balancing act between the creative world and real life. Tracks like Togetherness pulse with momentum, while 97BPM plays like a neon soaked time capsule.

Harris handled guitar, drums, bass, piano, and production, making this album a full display of what the guy can do when he’s behind the wheel. His sound blends blues roots, cinematic synth layers, funk rhythms, and a modern rock edge that brings to mind everything from Jeff Beck to Prince. It’s a fresh take that still respects where the genre came from.

Harris has earned praise from critics across the board, with Exclaim!, Real Gone Rocks, Video Sound Art Magazine, and others championing his mix of technical skill and emotional depth. It’s clear that Parallel Heart isn’t just another instrumental record, it’s a statement from an artist who refuses to pick one lane when he can build a whole highway.

If Mustard N Ketchup is any indication of what Harris is cooking next, fans are going to want to stay hungry.
