Milwaukee’s one-man cinematic doom conjurer Liminal Spirit has released the full-length album Unwell , a haunting and deeply psychological exploration of fear, decay, and consequence. The album marks the third release from multi-instrumentalist/composer Jerry Hauppa (Northless, Ara, Deorbit), whose work has been hailed as “darkly progressive” (The Obelisk) and “a cinematic journey through liminal spaces” (Music Waves).

A Story of Memory, Guilt, and Judgment

Unwell unfolds as a five-act descent into the mind of Phillip , a man suffering from dementia — a condition that strips him of his memories but not of his guilt. Over the course of the album, the listener witnesses his unraveling as he confronts forgotten horrors and faces a reckoning from those beyond his understanding.

The narrative begins with "Welcome to My World" , presented by Jim Reeves — a twisted beacon of false comfort from 1962, recontextualized as Phillip’s final grasp for salvation. The melody recurs throughout the record, morphing as the character’s psyche fractures.

As Hauppa explains:

“I wanted to explore the fear of decline — mental and physical — but also the moral weight of actions we can’t remember. Even if dementia erases memory, you’re still accountable for what you’ve done. Unwell is about that inescapable judgment and the sound of a mind collapsing under it.”

A Sonic Ritual in Microtones and Madness

Musically, Unwell fuses doom, industrial ambience, and microtonal experimentation, using custom microtonal guitars from  kiteguitar.com to create an unsettling, alien resonance. Every instrument — guitars, bass, synth, drum programming, violin, and vocoder — is performed by Hauppa himself, with Kaitlyn Menden lending her voice as Madeline .

The album was mastered by Jeff Wojtysiak (Spiral Sound Mastering) , whose work ensures the record’s oppressive atmosphere retains clarity and cinematic depth.

Critical response has been nothing short of reverent:

“A fearless act of musical necromancy.” – SeeRockLive

“If someone is needed to write the next Silent Hill soundtrack, Hauppa just handed in his resume.” – Metal Noise

“For metal fans who think outside the box and don’t need to be spoon-fed the typical metal sound.” – Metal Temple
