SEVENDUST's Clint Lowery Opens Up About His Spiritual Awakening: "I Don’t Want to Go Back Without Him"

Clint Lowery, guitarist for the legendary rock band SEVENDUST, recently revealed a powerful and deeply personal transformation during a conversation with ChurchLeaders. Having just completed his first tour as a "saved Christian," Lowery opened up about how his renewed faith in Jesus Christ has reshaped his life, his mindset, and even his role in the band he's called home for decades.

A Journey Rooted in Early Faith

Lowery’s spiritual story didn’t begin on stage or in a moment of sudden conversion. Raised in a musical Christian household, his faith was nurtured from a young age. “My mom and dad were musicians, devoted Christians,” he shared. “My grandfather was a Methodist preacher, my grandmother was a saint. So there was a foundation.”

But as is the case for many, that foundation faded into the background as life moved forward. Despite acknowledging Jesus and leaning into faith during difficult times, Lowery admits he often went through the motions—praying in crisis, attending church sporadically, and relying more on self than on the Savior.

Sobriety and Suffering: Crucibles of Change

Lowery got sober in 2007, and it was during this journey that he began to rebuild a relationship with a higher power. “The program asked me to connect with a higher power. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s easy.’ But I wasn’t really in the Bible. I wasn’t building that relationship,” he reflected.

It wasn’t until a frightening health scare in 2023 that everything changed. After visiting four neurologists with no clear answers and facing the possibility of a serious neurological illness, Lowery hit a spiritual rock bottom. “No one could tell me what was going on. I surrendered it all to God and Christ,” he said. “I immediately started reading the Bible.”

That’s when a neighbor named Jody, a pastor who lived just a few houses down, entered the picture in what Lowery sees as divine timing. After a heartfelt conversation, Jody asked the question that pierced straight to the core: Are you saved?

“I couldn’t answer that question,” Lowery admitted. “And right there in the backyard with him, I put my flag down and gave myself to Christ.”

Living the Faith: From Backyard to Bible Study

Lowery emphasized that this was more than an emotional decision—it was a commitment to a life of faith. “It wasn’t about doing good works to earn something,” he said. “It was about understanding grace… that Jesus has already paid it all.”

He dove into scripture, joined Bible studies, sought mentors, and began raising his children in the church. “Even when I’m reading and some of it goes over my head, I stay in the Word. The fear and anxiety started lifting,” he said. “And I just started really having these connections. I started seeing my encounters with other people change.”

Bringing the Light on Tour

Returning to the road with SEVENDUST after his transformation posed its own challenges. The band, known for their heavy sound and at times gritty lyrical themes, has been Lowery’s family for years—but he knew this new chapter might feel unfamiliar to some.

“When I got saved, some of the guys pulled back a bit. That hurt,” he admitted. “But God used that to grow my relationship with Him.”

Instead of preaching or pushing, Lowery focused on being different—more patient, more kind, less reactive. “I didn’t want to come in Bible-thumping,” he laughed. “I just tried to be a light.”

The change didn’t go unnoticed. Lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon even asked Lowery to lead prayers before shows. “That was an honor,” he said. “It was his way of saying, ‘I see you. I respect your journey.’”

A New Perspective, A Renewed Purpose

For Lowery, touring now feels different—not because the setlist changed, but because he did. “I used to let negativity creep in, gossip, ego. Now I try to stay quiet when needed, be courteous, and keep my focus on faith.”

He’s also learned the importance of surrender. “You can’t have worry and faith at the same time. When fear starts to take over, I pray instead.”

Even as he continues to deal with physical challenges from his health scare, Lowery remains steadfast in his spiritual walk. “I’m still on fire for this. I’ve been thirsty for it,” he said. “Every chance I get to talk about Jesus, I do.”

Looking Ahead

While SEVENDUST continues to move forward as a band, Lowery’s personal journey offers a powerful reminder of the transformation that faith can bring. It’s not just about music anymore—it’s about purpose.

“I don’t want to go back without Him,” Lowery said. “Everything I am now is because of Jesus Christ. And that’s the story I want to tell.”

For fans of SEVENDUST and followers of faith alike, Clint Lowery’s testimony stands as a bold and inspiring declaration: the rock and roll road might be loud and chaotic, but grace can still speak louder.
