If you’re a metal fan, writer, or even just a casual observer of the music scene, it’s been hard to escape the recent buzz surrounding Linkin Park and their new vocalist. Unfortunately, this week has not been kind to the band, as their latest announcement has been overshadowed by a torrent of controversy.
Linkin Park recently introduced Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara as their new frontwoman, but the excitement has quickly turned to tumult. Armstrong’s affiliation with the Church of Scientology and her previous support for convicted rapist Danny Masterson have become focal points of scrutiny, and the backlash has been swift and severe.
The controversy began shortly after the announcement, with former Scientologists Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At the Drive-In/The Mars Volta and his wife, Chrissie Carnell-Bixler, publicly criticizing Armstrong. The Bixlers have been outspoken about their negative experiences with Scientology and its members, particularly in light of the recent allegations against Masterson.
Armstrong issued a public apology, stating that her attendance at one of Masterson’s court appearances was a mistake. However, this apology has been met with further condemnation from the Bixlers. Chrissie Carnell-Bixler’s response was particularly scathing, accusing Armstrong of a disingenuous apology and highlighting her ongoing association with Scientology. Carnell-Bixler's statement on Instagram read:
“Dear Emily, If you’re not going to speak out against the human and child trafficking cult in which you are a part of and in which you enable by remaining silent on the crimes you know about, then you have no right to fill the shoes of Chester Bennington, a true advocate. I don’t care that you are very close to the serial rapist. I don’t care that you lied in your 'apology' Instagram story. I do care that you participated, after being asked, in the cruel intimidation of Jane Doe 1 with your cult pals at court. I do care that you didn’t once mention that you are a member of a child and human trafficking cult that covers up the abuses and rapes of children and adults.”
Bixler-Zavala added his voice to the chorus of criticism, questioning Armstrong’s sincerity and accusing her of being complicit in Scientology’s alleged abuses. He highlighted specific instances where Armstrong’s associates were reportedly involved in intimidating victims of Masterson’s alleged crimes.
The Church of Scientology, notorious for its secretive and aggressive tactics, has been embroiled in numerous scandals over the years. From bizarre operations like “Operation Freakout” to ongoing allegations of abuse and manipulation, the church's reputation is fraught with controversy.
In the wake of these revelations, Linkin Park faces a challenging situation. The band’s decision to hire Armstrong has been called into question, and critics have accused them of failing to thoroughly vet their new vocalist. Bixler-Zavala even suggested that the band should reconsider their choice and their pre-show playlist, hinting at a potential fallout from their decision.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Linkin Park will navigate this turbulent period. For now, the music world watches with bated breath as the fallout from this controversy continues to ripple through the industry.
